Sexual abuse is a much more serious problem in our society and in our churches that we often realize. Research says that one out of four girls and one out of six boys will experience sexual abuse before they reach the age of 18. Of those abused, about 20% have it happen before they reach the age of 8. It is estimated that in the US today there are 42 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
Given these sobering statistics, Churchnet encourages church leaders to be alert to this problem. Churches should take all possible measures to prevent abuse, and they should be prepared to offer support and assistance to those who have been victimized. Utilizing funds from a grant that Churchnet received some time ago, we can offer assistance for persons needing psychological counseling or emotional support. Contact any of the Churchnet staff if you are aware of someone needing this assistance.
